Abstract

The purposes of this study were to examine the levels of stress and coping in the
parents of high risk infants and to provide basic information for the nursing intervention
program of these.
The subjects of this study are the 134 parents (67 mothers and 67 fathers ) of infant s in
NICU of an university hospital in T aegu, Korea.
The instruments used for this study were revised by the researcher of this study bas ed
on Choi, Sung-Hee,s stress scale(40 items) and Lee, Ji-Won,s coping scale(18 items). The data were collected by using the questionnaire from September, 1998 to April, 1999.
The collected data were analysed by mean, st andard deviation, t - test and ANOVA using
the SPSS program.
The results of this study were as follow :
1. The level of stress between father s and mothers was not significantly different. when
it was compared with each cause of stress, ¡¯ the stress on medical treatment and
nursing procedures¡¯ was the highest level in both mothers and fathers.
2. Although the level of coping was not significantly different between mothers and
fathers , the cause related to¡®self-esteem and emotional comfort¡¯was significantly
higher in mothers than fathers.
3. When the level of stress was compared with demogr aphics, order of birth, birth
weight , baby¡¯s prognosis wer e significant in fathers, whereas feeding method, baby¡¯s
prognosis were significant in mothers.
4. When the level of coping was compar ed with demographics , age, relationship with the
wife aft er the hospit alization of baby, accompanying person in the time of visiting,
baby¡¯s birth weight , medical diagnosis were significant in fathers, whereas family type,
baby¡¯s birth weight were significant in mothers.
